What makes this course different to all the rest?

The answer is T.L.C., drive, motivation and energy. Students will be inspired and shown their own personal way forward.

The class has no more than 12 so that each student receives individual attention to bring out their personal best, which will be miles above their previous achievements. Individual instruction, personal encouragement and confidence building as well as making sure every student truly understands what is expected from them and how they can achieve it. Everyone has an individual tutorial towards the end of the course to assess work done and ensure they know where they are going next, along with individual follow-up notes to take home.

bike drawing exercise

Students are introduced to the important art of time management, to address their weaknesses and discover their strengths.

The course has been designed in collaboration with NCAD, LIT, CIT, (as well as UL and Queen's for architecture) to take the worry and uncertainty away from students who are often confused by what is required in their portfolio.

working on a portfolio

They study observational drawing and project development, are introduced to different media including water colours, and look at work by a range of artists past and present. They learn how to be inspired by ordinary things and try to broaden their minds.

Students are encouraged to interact with the group to help stimulate their minds and bounce ideas off each other. And while most of the time is spent in the studio, one of the items on their Œequipment list¹ is a pair of wellies, so we can have a tramp through the fields (sketch book in hand, of course) for a bit of fresh air now and then!

Bike

Killanena House is a home-from-home. The studio is attached to the house, so students have breakfast and go straight to work. It is a safe, comfortable environment, all the food is home cooked and everyone eats together. There is also a sitting room in the house where they can lounge later in the evening if they wish. Friendships are made, and students really enjoy their first experience of full-time art with like-minded people.

This is a close-knit, intimate, fully supervised and intense course (students may be in the studio up to 12 hours a day!) which will change students attitude, understanding and work ethic for ever and improve their drawing beyond recognition, bridging the gap between school and college.

You have the choice of staying full board, or if you live within half an hours drive you can attend daily.
